Kiama experienced a wild, wavy weekend as the ocean swell delivered waves up to 4-6 metres high, showcasing nature’s powerful strength as waves crashed against the headlands.

The region was lashed by powerful southerly swells, causing large waves to roll in across the Eastern Coastline of NSW, Victoria and Tasmania due to a Tasman Low pressure system.

Local resident, Deb Brown, captured this stunning photo of The Kiama Blowhole, which became a focal point for excited crowds as water sprayed high into the air, driven by the fierce ocean swells.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued surf warnings to continue through to Tuesday 18 June. NSW Police Force, Marine Area Command advises that:

  • People should considering staying out of the water and avoid walking near surf-exposed areas
  • Rock fishers should avoid coastal rock platforms exposed to the ocean and seek a safe location that is sheltered from the surf
  • Boaters planning to cross shallow water and ocean bars should consider changing or delaying their voyage
  • Boaters already on the water should arrt the appropriate safety equipment and wear a lifejacket
  • Boaters should remember to log on with their local Marine Rescue radio base, via VHF Radio or the Marine Rescue APP, and consider their safety management plan.
