The torrential rain which has battered Australia's Eastern Seaboard has led to a series of road closures and cancellations in Kiama.

A total of 78mm of rain fell on the Kiama local government area on Thursday and heavy rain is expected to continue throughout Friday.

To make matters worse, easterly winds up to 30km/h have been forecast for Friday and the large surf conditions have created harzardous conditions for coastal activities such as rock fishing, swimming and surfing.

The good news for local residents is that the rains are expected to ease late on Friday and the Bureau of Meteorology forecast for Saturday and Sunday is for dry weather with daytime temperatures between 13 and 21 degrees.

Kiama Council has advised that, due to the extreme wet weather, the following roads are affected:

  • Swamp Road, Jamberoo is closed due to water over the road
  • Rowlins Road, Gerringong has warning signs but remains open currently
  • Factory Lane, Jamberoo has warning signs but remains open currently
  • Jamberoo Mountain Road is currently closed from 9am-4pm Mon-Sat

Jamberoo Road, between Kiama and Jamberoo, was closed earlier on Friday but has now been re-opened.

All residents and visitors should avoid entering flood waters in a vehicle or on foot.

All Kiama Council sports fields have been closed for the weekend.

Group 7 officials have announced that due to the fields being deemed unplayable, this weekend’s Round 7 fixtures has been deemed a washot and the entire round has been postponed to 12-13 July.

All senior and junior matches in the Illawarra Rugby Union have been cancelled and the IDRU board is in discussions with the clubs about whether the matches will be rescheduled.

Kiama Golf Club is closed due to the wet weather until further notice.

For emergency services, to report flooding or request help: contact the SES on 132 500 or via their website.

The SES has issued a warning for the Illawarra/South Coast/Southern Tablelands that the residents of Bowral, Braidwood, Bega, Goulburn, Nerriga, Captains Flat should be on high alert due to the weather forecast.

Residents in all areas are reminded that the best way to stay up to date with warnings is via the Hazards Near Me app or the NSW SES website.

NSW SES and emergency service partners are continuing to support communities along the Hunter and Mid North Coast impacted by major flooding.

Emergency warnings advising people to evacuate, or seek shelter, remain in place in many locations from Bellingen in the north to Paterson in the south.

Severe weather is expected to continue with moderate showers, particularly over the Hunter as the weather system starts to move south.

Assistant Commissioner Colin Malone said NSW SES volunteers have been hard at work over the last several days right across the state.

“We’ve deployed more than 2200 volunteers who have been working with around 200 personnel from other emergency agencies, interstate resources and members of the Australian Defence Force.

“More than 500 boats, and 9 helicopters are working across our area of operations to support the community.”

Further updates will be posted by The Bugle and Kiama Council throughout the day.
