Former Kiama MP Gareth Ward's Terralong Street office has been stripped bare following his resignation from Parliament.

Ward resigned in on Friday morning less than an hour before NSW Parliament was due to remove him from office due to "unworthy conduct".

By Friday evening, his office had been transformed from a vibrant office decorated wih posters about upcoming community events and signage displaying "Gareth Ward MP, Member for Kiama" into a shell of its former self.

The bright blue facade also had the address of his website, which was recently shut down following his conviction on four counts of sexual assault offences.

The convicted rapist is in jail in Cessnock awaiting sentencing on 19 September.

He has announced his intention to appeal the verdict.

The Kiama electorate will go to the polls for a by-election in the coming months and Premier Chris Minns indicated that Labor will contest the seat after Ward only just hung onto power at the last election ahead of Katelin McInerney after a swing of more than 11% against him.

Photos of Ward's office being stripped lit up the comments on the Kiama Community Facebook page.

Reflecting the overhwelming feeling in the community, the vast majority of comments showed no sympathy for the 44-year-old former Shoalhaven Councillor who had held the seat since 2011, mainly as a Liberal Party representative before contesting the last election as an independent due to the charges against him.

Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald issued a statement on Friday to welcome Ward's resignation by saying the decision will clear the way for a by-election for the seat of Kiama.

“This marks an important step forward for our community,” Cr McDonald said.

The Kiama state electorate covers an area to Albion Park in the north, down to Shoalhaven with residents in Cambewarra, Bomaderry, Berry, Kangaroo Valley, Shoalhaven Heads and parts of Nowra and South Nowra, make up the electoral district.

During the 60-day period where Kiama is not represented by a local member in NSW Parliament, the government will be charged with the responsibility of handling the electorate's affaris before the new MP is elected.

Shoalhaven Mayor Patricia White said that local communities deserve strong representation in the NSW State Parliament and is looking forward to learning who will run for election.

“The northern Shoalhaven is a scenic and beautiful place with diverse communities who have shared experiences of isolation caused by natural disasters and have ongoing concerns relating to hospitals, transport and roads that require the focus of the NSW Government,” Cr White said.

“I welcome any candidate that the community elects and look forward to working with them to achieve what’s needed for the people of the Shoalhaven."

Ward's only public comment since his conviction was a statement released last Friday in which he said he has “provided instructions to my legal team to prepare an appeal at the earliest opportunity”.

He was charged by police three years ago after complaints against Ward from a man, aged 24 at the time, over an incident at Potts Point in Sydney’s east a decade ago.

Ward was also found guilty of indecently assaulting a recently turned 18-year-old at the politician’s Meroo Meadow home in 2013.
