Voting for the Referendum was relatively quiet in Kiama on Saturday with record early voting reported by the Australian Electoral Commission in the two weeks of pre-poll.
One now sacred tradition for voting in Australia is the Democracy Sausage, where various community organisations try to maximise the fundraising opportunity of the day from the many voters streaming by on election or referendum day.
At Kiama High a number of students today have been fundraising by running a cookie and egg roll stall outside the polling booth.
The goal is to support six Kiama High Science Students with costs when heading off to the National Youth Science Forum in January.
The students are:
Keziah Whitford, Charlie Meredith, Emily Farrah, Charlie Philpott, Maisie Whitbourn and Kai King.
The students wanted to say a massive thank you to both Kiama and Gerringong Rotary Club for their generous donations which are helping them fundraise. Also to Ms Power and Kiama High for their continued support.
It is 24 years since Australia last held a referendum that was to change the Australian Head of State to a President from Governor General, and was held on 6 November 1999 and like most referendums, failed to pass.
For a referendum to pass it requires a double majority, which means it has to have the majority of voters nationally, but also the majority of voters in the majority of states.
