As millions worldwide participate in Plastic Free July to reduce plastic pollution, Shellharbour City Council has introduced an exciting new campaign to combat single-use plastics locally.
Did you know that disposable coffee cups contain a plastic lining, which means they go straight to landfill?
Shellharbour's streets and screens will soon feature a series of vibrant educational animations, pop-up events, and giveaways designed to encourage the community to rethink their waste habits.
Mayor Chris Homer urged the community to get involved in reducing plastic waste. “Small changes can make a significant impact. With Australia set to phase out single-use plastics by 2025, it’s time to adopt simple solutions that drive meaningful change,” he said.
This week, the Shellharbour Council invites the community to join the fun by helping name three new animated characters representing common problem items often found in general red waste bins.
“These new characters represent items that often confuse people about which bin they belong in,” said Mayor Homer.
Congrats to Shellharbour Council for this initiative. They invite people to come along to Create and Play: Plastic Free July at the Shellharbour Civic Centre on Wednesday 17 July. From 11am to 1pm, to experience the fun and creativity in sustainability with a jam-packed program of FREE family-friendly activities on offer! There are no bookings required.
