A truck fire caused delays for motorists near Gerringong on Friday morning after an incident close to the approach to Belinda Street.

The Soilco truck was carrying recyclable materials and the driver pulled over to the side of the road after smoke emanated from the vehicle.

The northbound lane was closed to traffic for a short time while NSW Rural Fire Service crews from Gerringong, Dunmore, Jamberoo and Shoalhaven Heads combined with Kiama and Shellharbour Fire Rescue teams to extinguish the blaze after they rushed to the scene.

Water was trucked in to help put out the blaze and no one was injured.

The incident happened shortly after 9am with firefighters arriving to find a semi-trailer carrying a mixed rubbish load fully alight.

Due to the quick response from local authorities, motorists did not experience lengthy delays.

After the driver steered the truck to the side of the road, he disconnected his prime mover.

The firefighters also ensured there was no runoff into the local waterways by puting down booms which reduced any impact on the environment.
