As summer approaches, Kiama has an opportunity to reimagine how we celebrate together.
Fireworks have been a tradition, but they’re costly, noisy, and weather-dependent. Drones are exciting, but often unreliable in our coastal winds.
I’d love to see Kiama take a bold new direction with a Light and Water Spectacle - a show of lasers, lights, and ocean mist set to music.
It would be uniquely “Kiama”: ocean-themed, family-friendly, and environmentally kinder than fireworks.
This isn’t just about entertainment - it’s about identity. Imagine our harbour lit up in colour, boats joining a “parade of lights,” and music broadcast locally so people can watch from wherever they gather.
It could become a signature summer event that draws visitors while giving locals something to be proud of.
For me, this is also personal. My family name, Capodanno, literally means “New Year.”
Helping our town find a fresh, modern way to celebrate feels symbolic - like a new chapter for Kiama.
I share this idea not as a finished plan, but as a spark.
What could we create together if we dared to reimagine how Kiama celebrates?
Sincerely,
Sofia Capodanno
