Kiama Council is inviting residents to gather in recognition of National Sorry Day on Monday 26 May, with a commemorative ceremony at The Pavilion from 10am.
National Sorry Day offers a solemn opportunity to reflect on the historic mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples - particularly the Stolen Generations, who were forcibly removed from their families under government policies that have left lasting impacts on communities across the country.
The Kiama event will begin with a Welcome to Country by Aunty Lila Stewart, followed by a Smoking Ceremony led by Kristian Jarrett. Mayor Cameron McDonald will deliver a keynote address, and local school students will present an acknowledgement ceremony featuring wreaths made from native flowers.
From 11am to 12pm, school groups will take part in cultural and educational activities designed to deepen understanding and foster reconciliation.
Mayor McDonald described National Sorry Day as a powerful step on Australia’s continuing journey of truth-telling, healing and respect.
“National Sorry Day gives us all a moment to pause and reflect on the injustices faced by First Nations peoples,” Cr McDonald said.
“It’s also an opportunity to come together as a community—to listen, learn from the past, and build a more respectful and inclusive future.”
Held annually on 26 May, National Sorry Day commemorates the experiences of the Stolen Generations and serves as a reminder of the resilience of First Nations families.
Members of the public and local schools are warmly encouraged to attend this significant event.
