Bob Hawke’s legacy lives on with Landcare Award2022 Bob Hawke Landcare Award Winner - Bruce Maynard

Nominations for the 2025 Bob Hawke Landcare Award open today, marking a historic change in the award’s criteria. For the first time, groups and organisations are now eligible for the prestigious $30,000 prize, expanding the scope of recognition for excellence in landcare.

The Bob Hawke Landcare Award, a distinguished national accolade, honours individuals, groups, or organisations that have made significant contributions to landcare and inspired others to engage in sustainable practices within their communities. This award celebrates outstanding achievements in sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship.

Named in honour of former Australian Prime Minister the Hon. Bob Hawke AC, the award acknowledges his transformative role in elevating landcare from a grassroots initiative to a national movement with bipartisan support.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins, highlighted the award's role in recognising exceptional dedication to natural resource management and sustainable agriculture. "Whether as a landcare champion, a visionary leader, or an innovator in sustainable farming practices, the Bob Hawke Landcare Award celebrates the extraordinary commitment individuals and organisations demonstrate in caring for our land," Collins said.

“The award also shines a light on those who are enhancing their communities through improved land management and knowledge sharing.”

Dr Shane Norrish, CEO of Landcare Australia, reflected on Bob Hawke’s crucial role in establishing Landcare Australia as a national entity 35 years ago. "For over a decade, this award has honoured Bob Hawke’s lasting contributions to landcare and environmental conservation. Today, landcare is one of Australia’s largest volunteer movements, uniting thousands in tackling local environmental challenges.

“The decision to broaden the award’s criteria to include groups and organisations underscores the evolution and innovation within the landcare movement. I’m confident that the calibre of this year’s applications will be exceptional and will inspire continued progress."

The 2025 Bob Hawke Landcare Award winner will be announced at the National Landcare Awards Gala Dinner on Tuesday, September 23, 2025. Nominations close on December 31, 2025.

Funded by the Australian Government’s Natural Heritage Trust, the Bob Hawke Landcare Award is administered by Landcare Australia on behalf of the Australian Government.
