Emergency services were called to Tasman Road in Gerringong just before midnight on Saturday 13 January, 2024 following reports a car had rolled down the embankment.
Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police Station responded to find an SUV on Werri Beach. Officers were told the car was being reversed down Tasman Street towards Pacific Avenue, Gerringong when the vehicle suddenly turned and couldn’t be stopped.
The 17-year-old male driver and 17-year-old passenger managed to jump from the moving car, but the passenger was struck by the vehicle. NSW Ambulance Service paramedics responded, treating the female passenger for serious leg and back injuries.
Officers attached to Lake Illawarra Police District responded, establishing a crime scene.

NSW Police is following up social media reports of two separate motorbike accidents on Saturday 14 January and Sunday 15 January within 24 hours on Jamberoo Road, at the same corner. In both instances, the driver reportedly sustained injury and in the first incident, the driver sustained a broken foot after being hit by a truck.
